Hot drinks

Hot drinks, such as coffee and tea, can damage tissues in the mouth, pharynx and oesophagus. By hot drinks we mean liquids that are hotter than 65°C when drunk.

Hot drinks and your health

There are health effects associated with drinking hot drinks.

Drinking hot drinks increases the risk of oesophageal cancer

Drinking hot drinks has been linked to a higher risk of developing oesophageal cancer. This has recently been confirmed by the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer).

Hot liquids potentially cause damage to the cells in the oesophagus, as a result of which these cells may ultimately transform into cancer cells. You should therefore allow coffee and tea to cool down a little before you drink them.

iGene Passport

iGene offers you an insight into your personal risks of developing conditions and tells you whether it may be particularly important for you to take care when drinking hot drinks in order to help prevent certain conditions. In addition, an iGene Passport provides you with information on what else you can do to reduce any risks. Here we focus on behaviour that will help you maximise the benefits to your health. In the publication below you can read more about what iGene can do for you.
