Relaxation

Relaxing regularly and taking brief moments to relax on a daily basis are good for your physical and mental well-being. By doing so, you can prevent or reduce stress. Stress can be either acute or chronic. Acute stress triggers an immediate behavioural response and, from an evolutionary perspective, has an important function (the so-called ‘fight or flight response’). Chronic stress, on the other hand, has a damaging effect on the body. Amongst other things, this form of stress can be caused by a persistent heavy workload, relationship problems, family circumstances or financial problems.

Stress and your health

There are a number of health effects associated with preventing stress.

Preventing stress reduces the risk of a stroke

There are indications of a link between chronic stress and having a stroke. High blood pressure plays an important role here.

More research is needed to establish whether stress leads directly to high blood pressure or whether there is an indirect link (e.g. as a result of excessive alcohol consumption or poor eating, sleeping or exercising habits).

Preventing stress reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases

Stress appears to be linked to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Chronic stress can disrupt biological processes such as blood pressure, cholesterol metabolism and fat metabolism. These factors can contribute to blood vessel damage and, consequently, can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Various therapies are available that can teach you how to relax or deal with tension or stress. These can help to reduce your risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases.
