Underweight

If you weigh too little in relation to your height, this can be a health risk. A method that is commonly used for measuring whether a person is over- or underweight is the Body Mass Index (BMI). Is your BMI lower than 18.5? In that case you are considered to be underweight. Being underweight can mean you are lacking in essential nutrients, your immune system may be impaired and you may become lethargic and feel tired.

Being underweight and your health

There are health effects associated with being underweight.

Being underweight increases the risk of osteoporosis

Following the menopause, women are more at risk of developing osteoporosis, as they produce fewer oestrogens.

Small quantities of male hormones are produced, however, which are converted into oestrogen hormones by fatty tissue. If there is not much fatty tissue, fewer hormones can be converted. Women who are underweight therefore have a particularly high risk of developing osteoporosis.
